monday musings |7.19.16|

Another Monday – wasn’t it just Friday? All those in favor of eternal three-day weekends raise your hand. *raises*

It’s been a busy Monday for both of us – E is jetting off to NYC for work and I’m working on lots of 2017 planning whilst trying to prepare for a big blogger conference in less than 20 days. Eek!

Even amongst the chaos, I know myself well enough to know I can’t resist my early access to the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. I signed up for a Nordstrom debit card long ago and although I never spend enough to get the rewards ($20 for spending $2,000…LOL), I do love that it gives me early access to shop their exclusive sales.

Now, in keeping with my month of saving, I’m trying not to buy anything “frivolous” (AKA anything other than food) for the rest of the month, but that doesn’t mean you guys can’t…right? Here are my favorite picks from the #nsale, going on July 22 through August 8 (card-holders can shop today through the 21st):

Anything you’ve seen that you’re loving so far? Share with us (but make me promise I won’t buy anything)!

make a statement: warby parker’s fall collection

Warby Parker is a brand that’s been on our radar for a while. Their eye for detail, on-trend frames + emphasis on social good makes them our go-to shop for the perfect pair.

Their much anticipated Fall Collection launches today and includes styles with rich reds, golden browns, cool greys + other harvest hues to get you ready for pumpkin spice latte season autumn. Best of all, every frame is be available through their free Home Try-On program. That’s right – pick your fave frames, they send them to you (for free!) and you can try them on before deciding on a purchase.

We’ve picked four of our favorite styles from their new line and paired them with the perfect fall ensembles:

1 // otis antique shale fade  2// simone tea rose fade
3// caspar jet black  4// barnett quail egg grey

Our go-to look would be the Simone Tea Rose Fade – the perfect frame to pair with boyfriend jeans, a tee and sneaks. What’s your favorite style from the new line? Head over to their site and let us know in the comments below!

summer bag essentials

Though it definitely already feels like it in Atlanta, this weekend officially marks the start of summer. (Sunday also happens to be Father’s Day AND the summer solstice, so be sure to make plans to soak up the longest day of the year with dad!)

To both of us, a perfect summer means one thing – travel. Weekend trips, week-long vacations and even month-long adventures (more on this later!) are in the works and we couldn’t be more excited. It’s safe to say that we both inherited the wanderlust gene and are always scheming + dreaming about our next places to cross off our lists.

E just got back from Yosemite, an amazing trip that I’m sure couldn’t be done justice through lots of snapchats but still looked oh-so-incredible and is prepping for a Fourth of July vacation to San Diego, while I’m gearing up for a weekend in Chicago and then a month of working + visiting my family in Asia which I still can’tevenbelieveishappening. With so many trips in order, the fun has to wait until you can get done with the dreaded preparation, also known as packing (or more commonly referred to as every girl’s worst nightmare). While I’m always going to remember things like socks, shirts and black jeans (obviously), I always seem to forget the fun stuff. It’s the last thing on my mind, but the first thing to make a trip super fun. Luckily, we’ve got you covered – here are our essentials to the perfect summer bag:

Summer Bag Essentials

ONE // the perfect suit. With as much time as we (and hopefully you) plan to spend at the water this year, it’s a no-brainer that having a bathing suit that’s A. fashionable and B. comfortable is a necessity. I recently bought a new one from overseas at Triangl, the creators of the color-blocked neoprene suit trend and am absolutely in love – however, if you’re looking to pay a little less and avoid the high international taxes, you can try this one from Rotita or this one from VS.

TWO // a bag to get through it all. You can’t have the perfect summer bag essentials post without the perfect bag, right? For us, simplicity and versatility are key. You want something you can use throughout the summer that can transition from the beach to daytime errands to taking work to the coffee shop. We love this one from Nordstrom and this bright choice from J. Crew.

THREE // lip products with spf. Did we emphasize that enough? If you’ve ever gone out in the sun for a while and NOT used a product with SPF on your lips, you know where we’re coming from. Trust me: lip. sunburns. are. the. worst. I wish them on none of you and only on your worst enemies. This Sugar Lip Treatment with SPF 15 is my absolute favorite, sun or no sun – a hint of color and super moisturizing. I recommend it in rosé!

FOUR // dry shampoo. What did we do in the days before dry shampoo? (Well, baby powder, but #ratchet, so) I’ve been on the hunt for a while for a good one and fell in love after I got this Klorane one in my Birchbox. It’s a winner in my book (plus it snagged the Allure Best of Beauty award, so I trust it). It contains oat milk extracts and never leaves any yucky color or residue behind. I’ve never been one to get that super awesome beachy hair, so this is a lifesaver.

FIVE // good sunnies. I’m sure we all have 50 pairs of sunglasses laying around, but this season, I’m really loving the new color mirrored trend. The ones pictured above are the ones I’m currently lusting after – Ray-Bans, of course. For a cheaper find, these ones from LOFT are only $24.50 and are 40% off right now!

SIX // a captivating read. Last but certainly not least, you’re going to need a good book (or a few) to get through the summer, whether you’re at the pool or hanging out in the park. We’re just working on starting a monthly book club with a few friends and our first choice is The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins. I haven’t started yet (sorry guys), but have heard it’s a great one. If you have any other suggestions for good summer reads, please let me know – gonna need quite a few on two 24-hour plane rides!

What else do you guys always keep in your summer bag? Tell us below – there’s always room for more!

P.S. – Wanted to put the selfie stick in here, but avoided it for you guys. You’re welcome.

Summer Style // clover cloth

You may have seen a few Instagrams or tweets from us across your feed about clover cloth, a new clothing line out of Los Angeles. To make a long backstory short, the PR company where I work decided we were going to start a clothing line with all the free time that comes with running a boutique firm 😉 What started as a passion project has quickly turned into a growing clothing line and another reason I love my job.

The Spring/Summer 2015 Collection features tanks and tees with bold messaging, bright colors and gold embellished designs that can be worn to drinks or in down dog. Created with the belief that mindfulness doesn’t trump style, clover cloth was made for the style-savvy girl who wants to make a statement with her clothes and her social consciousness — she wants to spread love, do good and look good.

Locally conceptualized, designed and produced in LA, clover cloth‘s cuts are made with 100% organic, fair trade cotton, grown using sustainable irrigation systems and manufactured by employees making twice the minimum wage. Every clover cloth purchase plants a tree and each season’s limited edition design supports a specific social cause. This season’s limited edition design is the ‘Free Everyone’ tank where 25% of the proceeds are donated to Save Elephant Foundation – a non–profit organization dedicated to stopping elephant trafficking, slavery and abuse in Thailand. Anyone who knows me knows saving the world is on my (very long) to-do list, so Free Everyone is easily my favorite style. K, on the other hand, loves the IM POSSIBLE tank and has been spotted once or twice rocking clover cloth on her travels near and far.

Get your hippie glam on at www.clovercloth.com and keep up with clover cloth on Instagram + Twitter for updates + sneak peeks into the Fall/Winter line!

what we’re loving: june

Okay, so we’ve committed the cardinal sin of blogging – *shudders* – going an entire month without posting. All the apologies, but rest assured knowing we were out in the world living life and bringing back lots of lovely things to blog about for you fine people.

In a few words, May was full of visitors, vacations, weddings and time spent doing what we both love.

Now we’re here in June and ready for another great month (hopefully full of a lot more blogging time). It’s almost our one year blogaversary (EEP!), which means stepping up our game, so expect to see a lot more coming very soon.

June brings with it a lot of great things for both of us – here’s a roundup of what we’re loving this month, filled with bright colors, spring flowers and fresh eats:

[1/Style Me Pretty] [2/Park Floral Design] [3/Pinterest] [4/Cody Uncorked]

[5/The Everygirl] [6/Pinterest] [7/Free Spirit Salon] [8/Burkatron]

It’s all about color and freshness in June – even fresh new hair (yep, #7 is me)! Threw in a little DIY at the end there as E is working on lots of new ways to spruce up her new beach abode (more on that later). What are you all crushing on this month?

March roundup : what we’re loving

Well, it looks like I’ve been stuck in another world, as I blinked and it’s already MARCH. With the exception of the last weeks or so, we haven’t even really had a winter in Atlanta (and I know from Emily’s beach snapchats they’re sure never having one in Santa Monica).

It’s exciting, though, to be moving toward spring with so many exciting things coming up! One of our good friends from college is getting married in May, which used to seem so long away but is now right around the corner, so expect many pictures of the gang reunited after that! Emily heads to her heart’s home away from home, Sayulita, this month, too, but I’ll let her tell you about that later.

With the onset of March, I feel like we can finally start to embrace a bit of springtime, color and make an escape from all-winter foods; hence, the need for a new mood the set the month. Here’s a roundup of things we’re loving this month:

1 // bloompop – this adorable site allows you to ship blooms from local florists to tons of zip codes in the U.S. I love the variety of the arrangements – it’s a definitely more personal than your average bouquet! Beautiful flowers are a must to brighten up a small space in springtime.

athleta2// athleta – after I got my first pair of athleta tights from my sister for Christmas, I was sold. Their workout clothes are absolutely top-notch: durable, comfortable and (obviously) stylish. I am obsessed with their “Be Free” knickers – these things take a beating during my workouts and are still good as new. I just picked up the Chain pattern in dress blue & coralade – now that it’s warm out, I’ll be wearing them around to more than just the gym!

BL Nails

3// spring nails! For some reason, I can’t get down with having my nails dark all winter – it seems too stuffy and harsh for me (plus as soon as it chips, it’s terribly obvious, right?). Butter London has been my favorite nail polish for a while and I’m sticking with it this year – they have so many great shades to take you from winter into spring. My all-time favorite is All Hail the Queen, but I’m about ready to spring it up with a little Macbeth.

Messy Nessy Chic4// messy nessy chic. I’ve been reading this blog for a while after discovering it from a friend who I studied abroad with and can honestly say this site does no wrong. Written mostly about everything Paris, MNC always highlights the coolest hidden treasures in the city. I absolutely love her “13 Things I Found on the Internet Today” series. The only problem is that once I’m there, I’m in an spiraling black hole clicking-spree because everything is so worth reading.

Hot Dudes Reading

5// hot dudes reading. While this needs no explanation, whoever came up with this is a genius and probably worthy of best friend status. The best part (okay, the second best part) is that they donate to First Book, a non-profit providing books to kids in need, which also happens to be a partner with our sororities’ national philanthropy! Promoting literacy instead of the endless stream of basic – yes.

Anything else we should check out this month? Leave a comment or tweet us @highlandandrose and we’ll make sure everyone sees it. Check in next week for where we’ll be on the best day of the month (hint: better wear your green)!

gypsy gold

I love when my jewelry has a story behind it. When someone compliments you on your jewelry, there’s nothing better than telling them all about how you searched and searched for that one ring to complete the perfect ring stack and you stumbled upon it at flea market; or the feeling you get when wearing a piece of jewelry with sentimental value.

One of my best friends has been perfecting the craft of jewelry making for years but most recently has taken her habit to the next level, producing top quality, one-of-a-kind pieces that are unique and perfectly on trend. Jillian’s pieces are classic with a bohemian twist which is why Gypsy Gold is the perfect namesake.

The first Gypsy Gold bracelet Jillian gave me has, you guessed it, a story. We were at the beach with friends and family and Jill asked one of the people on the trip about her bracelet. The woman explained that she had had matching bracelets made for her and her best friend and the tassel, beads and charm all meant something different. A week later for my birthday, Jillian had made an almost identical bracelet for me, and made herself a matching one too.#besties

All of Jill’s pieces are hand-beaded and the beads themselves are carefully picked out and imported from countries all over the world. Everything is made with 100% natural elements such as wood, semi precious and precious stones, paired with scintillating gold, sterling silver, and brass that only gets better with time.

Check out Jillian’s next trunk show! We’ll share details ASAP. You can see more Gypsy Gold goodies on Instagram @gypsygoldjewlry and on her website: www.gypsygoldjewelryshop.com

october mood board // welcoming fall

As much of a cliche it is, I just LOVE fall. And no it’s not all the Pumpkin Spice Lattes on every corner (fyi, how I feel about the coveted #PSL). This is my first fall on the west coast, and while the temperatures are slower to drop here and the palms trees are evergreen, there is still a crispness in the air that reminds me of the changing season. Bring on the seasonal eats (um, butternut squash everyday), sweaters and apple cider!

Here’s my mood board with some of the things I’m loving/dreaming of this month.

[1/Not Without Salt] [2/Cereal Magazine] [3/My Name is Yeh] [4/Style Me Pretty]

[5/My Ideal Home] [6/Pinterest] [7/The Fresh Exchange] [8/Pinterest]

That apple cider rum punch looks like the quintessential fall libation, am I right?  I’m thinking about taking a special trip to Big Sur in late November, but may be putting it on hold; I have been dreaming of driving that PCH route forever and am looking forward to it someday. Speaking of rum punch, that bar cart is perfectly styled for hosting a fall get together – I can’t wait to have a backyard to host outdoor dinner parties. A book and coffee in bed is exactly what I need to relax and fall style is all about staying comfortable – I’ll be rocking some combo of a big sweater, skinnies and booties all season long.

What are some things you’re loving this month?

august moodboard: what i’m loving.

Can you guys believe it’s August? It might be the most overused phrase in recent memory, but it’s true when they say the time passes faster every year.

I’m expecting some great things from this month, however. Birthday month (we’re old), summer and only one more month standing between me and a trip to California to visit the other half of this crew (yay!). They’re going to be some busy, wonderful weeks and I’m feeling good about it.

Time for a first-of-the-month moodboard with what I’m loving this August:

[1 / anthropologie] [2/ solebich] [3/ etsy] [4/ pinterest] [5/ vlinspiratie] [6/ amber interiors] [7/ natasha oakley] [8/ food & wine] [9/ diy balamoda]

I am dying for that Anthro tee and a lighted patio to sit on. Summer is for simple, sweet things – stripes, braids, calm colors and mismatching. Live in something comfortable this summer, enjoy the outdoors and get ready to vacation next month. On another note – I really need to learn that braid. Anyone have any good tutorials?

What are you guys inspired by this month?

beauty spotlight: july must-have

I’m not a huge “spend hours getting ready” person. Never have been, probably never will be. I, like any other girl, enjoy primping a little from time to time, but am not the type to spend hours perfecting my face in the morning over another 30 minutes of sleep (#sleepovereverything).

That being said, I’m wholeheartedly invested in the key beauty products I do use. I will never understand drawers upon drawers of products: I’m more of a “quality over quantity” type girl here – invest in what you love and it will be enough.

As I mentioned before, Atlanta summers are hot. Real hot. Braves games, outings in Piedmont Park and even a patio brunch can be enough to send you into crazy sweat sticking-to-the-seat mode (don’t act like you don’t know). There’s nothing better than coming home at the end of a long day and cleansing the dirt away.

Enter my new best skincare friend: Suki’s Exfoliate Foaming Cleanser. I would venture so far as to say this stuff might be the most amazing thing to ever happen to face wash. I got a sample in my Birchbox last month and I was immediately sold. The cleanser itself is a mixture that has a texture like sand, but once you rub it on, it foams and exfoliates perfectly. The mix of lemongrass & chamomile makes the smell enough to make you want to keep using it, but it doesn’t hurt that it works great, too. The only downfall? It’s a little pricey at $32.95 for a large jar, but…trust me on this one.

I’m a new convert to the world of Birchbox and (despite initially being a little skeptical) I’m in love. E convinced me to sign up a few months ago and I have fully enjoyed every product I’ve gotten so far. It’s definitely worth the effort to put in the time to customize your beauty profile to get the right products for you!

If you’re looking to try it out, I would fully recommend it – at only $10/month, it’s basically Netflix for your beauty routine (yep, I went there) and makes each month’s mail more exciting (because who doesn’t like to get packages). Sign up using this link and you’ll even help me out a little, too! 🙂

Have you guys gotten anything good in your Birchbox lately? Comment & let me know – I love hearing what others received in their boxes that month!
